NTSC and PAL, Which Is better? How to Convert Between NTSC and PAL?

Overview

Now many users have asked why their DVD files produced in America can not be normally played in European DVD players. Well, that is because America and Europe use different color encoding systems and America uses NTSC while Europe uses PAL. Even though you know the words NTSC and PAL, but you may not know what NTSC and PAL really stand for, what their differences are and how to play the DVD, VOB, etc produced in America in Europe or vice versa. Now the following article just gives a description.

What are NTSC and PAL?

NTSC, abbreviation for National Television System Committee, is mainly used in America. PAL, abbreviation for Phase Alternating Line, is mainly used in Europe, Asia, and Australia.

The Differences between NTSC and PAL

The reason why the DVD, VOB, etc produced under NTSC can not be played under PAL is that NTSC and PAL uses different electrical power systems and resolution qualities.

Electrical Power System

  • America and other regions using NTSC use 60 hertz as their electrical power, which means NTSC sends signal at 60 pulses per second, that is 30 lines of the image. Europe and other regions supporting PAL use 50 hertz as their electrical power, which means PAL generates signal at 25 lines of the image.

Resolution Quality

  • A television under NTSC can broadcast 525 lines while PAL television 625 lines. And we all know that the higher the resolution you have, the more amount of visual information you will get.

Countries Using NTSC and PAL

  • The countries using NTSC include U.S.A, Canada, Cuba, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Chile, Taiwan, South Korea, etc. The countries using PAL include Austria, Australia, China, Hong Kong, Germany, Belgium, Iraq, India, Jordan, Kuwait, etc.
